We started as a two-person operation in 1995 with just a handful of customers. We have continued to grow as a family-owned, locally operated business committed to better serving residential and commercial customers throughout the Plymouth County, Iowa, area.

In recent years, we’ve partnered with LJP Waste Solutions in Mankato, Minnesota, to strengthen our commitment to implementing more sustainable solutions into our operations that contribute to our zero-landfill initiatives. By providing reliable services and easy-to-use waste solutions, we help Plymouth County residents and businesses manage their waste efficiently and sustainably.

Van’s Sanitation & Recycling started with a simple goal: to provide the best waste collection services in Plymouth County with honesty, integrity, and reliability.

In 1995, we got a contract with the City of Le Mars for garbage removal and have held that contract ever since. We now provide residential trash removal for several towns throughout Plymouth County, Iowa, such as Akron, Oyens, Craig, Hinton, Le Mars, and Westfield. We also provide garbage removal services for rural Plymouth County as well.

In 1998, we started recycling cardboard at Blue Bunny, local Wal-Mart stores, and other local businesses. Today, we pick up cardboard and other recycling materials from over 25 commercial customers and several Wal-Mart stores in the surrounding area.

In 2012, we opened a shop in Omaha, Nebraska, where we provide cardboard recycling to several local Wal-Mart stores and other businesses in the Omaha area. As we continue to work with LJP Waste Solutions moving forward, we can’t wait to expand our efforts to create a more sustainable local community working toward minimizing our landfill waste contribution as much as possible.

As we’ve grown as a company, we’ve continuously expanded our fleet and invested in new technologies while staying true to our initial mission of delivering exceptional waste management solutions to local homes and businesses!

As the waste industry evolves, so do we. From implementing sustainable waste reduction programs to offering recycling solutions for businesses, we’re always looking for better ways to serve our customers and protect the environment.

In March 2012, we got the bid to start sorting the residential material from Plymouth County, which led to sorting recyclables from Cherokee in June 2012. We are processing approximately 88 tons for Plymouth County and approximately 30 tons for Cherokee monthly using a single-stream recycling process.

Here are some of the other ways we’ve helped pave the path toward building a cleaner community:

  • Van’s was instrumental in helping the City of Le Mars start the 90-gallon garbage program and implement the city’s residential and commercial recycling program.
  • Van’s was instrumental in helping the City of Hinton get started with a 65-gallon garbage program, and we also helped them implement a 90-gallon recycling container program.
  • Van’s is currently working with Wells Enterprises to achieve a goal of zero waste initiatives and minimizing landfill contribution.
  • Van’s is working with Plymouth County to convert all rural communities from drop-off sites to 90-gallon curbside pickup.
  • Van’s opened a Recycling Center in April 2012. The Recycling Center handles all recycling from Plymouth County and Cherokee County.
  • Since the opening of our Recycling Center, Van's has also been awarded a contract from the City of Spencer.
  • A total of 140 tons of single-stream recycling is processed every month through Van’s Sanitation Recycling Center! We also currently average approximately 480 tons of cardboard recycling each month.

Van's Sanitation is proud to say that in 2013, our recycling program earned the Governor's Iowa Environmental Excellence Award — Special Recognition in Waste Management — along with the City of Le Mars and Plymouth County Solid Waste Agency. We also received the Best Business Recycling Program award from the Iowa Recyclers Association (IRA).

We have worked hard to implement residential and commercial recycling programs and are excited about how well they have turned out. We could not have done this without the cooperation of local cities, landfills, Plymouth County and Cherokee County residents, and all of the local businesses who participate in making our environment a better place!
